Orcrist's Weekly Blog

7 Weeks 1 Day

The puppies are hitting their cutest stage right now. They have lots of energy when they are awake and then they will crash for an hour. They are crate training and have done well.  They already come to me when it is night time so that they can be put in their crate.  That is remarkable since Orcrist is with me when they are being put in their crate for the night. This is my last set of pictures so I hope they are enjoyable!

This past weekend I got to visit with most of the new puppies owners.  I was incredible watching as everyone interacted with the puppies and got to see their unique personalities.  They are all continuing to grow well and are well into crate training.  They have had their 6 week shots and dewormer so they will be ready for their new homes.  I will post again on Friday-my last post as next week I get ready for they puppies to be picked up. Pictures this time are courtesy of my wife (her second round).

6 Weeks 1 Day

The puppies personality tests are complete.  I had them finished yesterday and intended to post them but one of the puppies bumped my computer and managed to shut off a setting for internet access.  Fortunately, a local tech guy got it up and running this morning.  Here are a few bonus notes to go along with the personality tests.  Pictures and weights will come later today.  Courage did pass away.  He had a beautiful spirit but I have come to recognize what a friend who has been doing this for 20 years said to me--a puppy that is a runt after the first couple of days is rarely normal.  I have only had few runts (2 this litter) so I didn't understand--it is so devastating to invest so much love and care and then lose them.

The 7 puppies are all healthy and active.  They had their first night of crate training last night.  Normally, I try to make their first day a short one (5-6 hours) but because of my internet issues I went to be later than normal and they had an 8 1/2 hour first day.  Remarkably, their was only one accident!  When I took them out of their crates, all of them were anxious to go to the bathroom--which is exactly what I look for.

Additional puppy information:
Faith: she is my most active puppy by far.  She is incredibly friendly and energetic.  She loves to play.  She has a very full personality--she is all in all the time.

Hope: she is very balanced and loving.  She likes to play but really enjoys being held.

Joy: also loves to play hard but will snuggle for long periods of time.  She has a very strong desire to please as well.

Love: is very loving and will play with her siblings energetically.  She loves to snuggle.  She has a balanced personality, like Hope.

Patience: is my most snugly puppy.  She is completely comfortable being held for long periods of time.  She will play with the other puppies but would prefer being with us.

Trust: has a very balanced personality.  He is intelligent, active and loving.  He likes to be held and petted.

Virtue: obviously wants to please us.  He was unable to get the crumpled paper from our personality test in his mouth so he used his feet and nose to retrieve it!  He is active and loves to play.

5 Weeks 5 Days

The puppies are looking fabulous this week.  They have all gained weight and are very active in eating their solid foods now.  In fact, this morning, five preferred their solid food mix to their mother--who had to compete with them for it (actually, she just let them eat).  It is fun to see them play.  They love their toys and will often haul around their tennis ball. This week, I will begin their personality testing.  I can already tell you that all of them will have the typical golden retriever response to being held on their backs (you love me! I love this!).  They are also very comfortable being held in the upright position.  Last, they follow me incredibly well.

Girl Puppies

Faith

Faith is one of the two most active from this litter.  She is very playful and energetic.  She has lots of personality and confidence.
Weight: 4 lb 15 oz

Hope

Hope is well balanced.  She is very friendly and loves to be with us.  She is also quite active and likes to play with her sibblings.
Weight: 5 lb 13 oz

Joy

Joy is one of the two most active from this litter (which is still quite relaxed).  She loves to explore and plays hard.  She is very outgoing and social
Weight: 5 lb 3 oz

Love

Love has partially regained her earlier personality (she was relaxed because she wasn't feeling well).  She is explorative and loves to play.  She enjoys being held. Along with Hope, she has a very balanced personality.
Weight: 4 lb 11 oz

Patience

Patience is the most relaxed of the puppies right now.  She is less involved in the other's play.  However, she is active and loves to be held. She is a cuddler.
Weight: 4 lb 10 oz

Boy Puppies

Courage

Courage has returned from the vet and is being cared for by my daughter.  He is on a high calorie diet to help him catch up the weight that he lost. However, he is not completely better yet.  Hopefully, the next couple of days gets him over the hump. He is incredibly loving and affectionate.
Weight: not home to measure but my guess is between 2 lb 8 oz and 3 lb.

Trust

Trust continues to be active yet cuddly.  He loves to be held but will play with everyone.
Weight: 5 lb 9 oz

Virtue

Virtue is a sweetheart who likes to be held.  He also enjoys running around and playing with his siblings.
Weight: 5 lb 9 oz

5 Weeks 1 Day

Our puppies had a tough couple of days--their mother went through some water and got a bacteria that gave them belly aches  They are all doing much better now and should begin to pick up weight and size again.  That is why courage is at the vet. This group of puppies continues to be incredibly friendly and calm.  They love to play but they are still very relaxed and friendly. You will see that they are incredibly cute and have nice coats and coloration.  I will begin their personality profile this week and hope to have it posted next Friday.

Girl Puppies

Faith

Faith is playful and loves to be with me.  She will lick my face, and play with my feet. She is super friendly and is getting her retriever instincts early--she has walked around with her tennis ball already.
Weight: 4 lb 2 oz

Hope

Hope is beautiful and also love to play with me.  She is currently gnawing on my toes (as I type).  Earlier, she and Virtue both fell asleep on my feet.
Weight: 4 lb 8 oz

Joy

Joy is playful, friendly and loving. She is very content and has a wiggling tail almost all the time.
Weight: 3 lb 15 oz

Love

Love is gentle and loving.  She is more relaxed than her sisters and loves to be held and petted.

Patience is my daughter's (Caitria) favorite. She loves her cute face and she loves to snuggle.  She is very playful and loves to be with us.
Weight: 3 lb 5 oz

Boy Puppies

Courage

Courage is currently with the vet.  He is already much better and we expect him to make a full recovery quickly.  He is spunky and loves to play.  He really loves to spend time with us.  He is friendly with cats and loves to curl up in his basket. I will add his pictures and weight tomorrow.

Weight: 4 lb 8 oz

4 Weeks 5 Days

We have had a really tough week--Peace developed an infection in her wound and the veterinarian was not able to save her.  She was such a sweetheart-she had all of us wrapped around her little paws. The puppies have also not grown as expected--their dewormer seems to have set them back more than normal.  We are expecting to adjust both their diet and Orcrist's to help them pick up their growth rate.

This week's pictures are courtesy of my wife.  She is going to be taking a bigger part in raising the puppies so I had her take and label this round of pictures. The puppies personalities are continuing to develop--though they are still in their beginning stages.  From here, they will become more and more active so that we can tell much more of who they are becoming.

Girl Puppies

Faith

Faith has all sorts of personality. She loves to play and is very inquisitive.
Weight: 3 lbs 15 oz

Hope

Hope is active, inquisitive and likes to play with other puppies.
Weight: 4 lbs 2 oz

Joy

Joy likes to play with us. She will greet us at the door when we have been away.
Weight: 3 lbs 14 oz

Patience

Patience is active and likes to explore.  She loves to play and was hard to photograph because she wanted to see all the new things.
Weight: 3 lbs 3 oz

Boy Puppies

Courage

Courage has had a very tough week. Orcrist does not have as much milk as she normally has had and he has not yet begun eating solid foods. He is very inquisitive and likes to explore. I am temporarily putting a hold on him until he is eating as he should.
Weight: 2 lbs 0 oz

Trust

Trust will explore at times but loves to snuggle.  He is very smart and cute. He has been adopted already!
Weight: 4 lbs 2 oz

Virtue

Virtue is active, playful and loves to explore.  You will find him playing with his siblings.
Weight: 4 lbs 0 oz

4 Weeks 1 Day

My son has made some observations this week. He is still limited by their sleep cycles.  Many will eat and then fall asleep.  That said, he was able to see them during several active periods and has a few beginning personality observations.  I still see this group as very relaxed.  They are calm, very loving and enjoy being with us. They are also very intelligent and like to explore their new environments. They have also become quite photogenic.

Girl Puppies

Faith

Faith likes to eat and will fall asleep curled up in her food bowl.  She is cute and loves to be held.
Weight: 3 lbs 11 oz

Hope

Hope is my most explorative puppy.  She is the first to check out a new environment, first to eat, and first (with Patience) to playfight.  She is the most active puppy at this point.
Weight: 3 lbs 14 oz

Joy

Joy is adorable and friendly. She is both explorative and laid back.
Weight: 3 lbs 9 oz

Love

Love is laid back.  Unfortunately, she falls asleep in your arms so we don't have a lot of personality information on her yet.
Weight: 4 lbs 4 oz

Patience

Patience was our first playfighter (with Hope) and she is very funny.  She will also explore her environment.
Weight: 3 lbs 7 oz

Peace (temporarily unavailable-see below)

Peace likes to see new things and to be held.  She is a little like her mother.  She likes to be with you and also enjoys her time when you are not there.  She is temporarily unavailable because sometime shortly after pictures on Friday she was injured.  She has a small cut on her front leg and a bruised back leg.  We are nursing her back to health and once she is better she will be available again.
Weight: 2 lbs 14 oz

Boy Puppies

Courage

Courage is between relaxed and explorative. He is still smaller than the rest but is healthy and active.
Weight: 2 lbs 8 oz

Trust

Trust is relaxed and loves to be held.
Weight: 4 lbs 0 oz

Virtue

Virtue likes to explore and will be the first to greet us.
Weight: 3 lbs 10 oz

3 Weeks 1 Day

We have given the puppies their names and tags and that means that I can start taking individual pictures.  I will add their weights later today or tomorrow (depending on how Tizona's puppy pictures go).  This is a highly social litter.  They love to be with me and my son and will follow us around.  Of course, they are still a little wobbly and their heads are still just a bit big for their bodies but it is so cute to watch them come to us already.  And if we stay still, they will cuddle with our feet.  I we are sitting down, they will all crowd around our legs.  They also continued to be very relaxed ithroughout the neurological stimulation.  That said, they are active and love to interact with each other.  Since the puppies just got their tags today, I can't give any personal comments.  Also, I will be out of town for much of this week so it will be my son and son-in-law that will be caring for the puppies.  Hopefully, they can get some good information on each puppy by next week (when I will be back to post more pictures).

2 Weeks 2 Days

Sorry for the delay in my post, my hope is that starting with week 3, I can put up 2 posts per week (on Friday and either Monday or Tuesday).  The nine puppies are all well.  Their eyes are open and they crawl everywhere.  They do spend most of their day either eating or sleeping, though.   I have one puppy that is smaller right now--that will change in the upcoming weeks once they start eating more solid food.  Yes, they have already been nibbling at their dog food.  It is incredibly cute to see them lay at the bowl's edge trying to chew at the food. During this week, I expect that they will transition to getting a lot of nutrition that way.

Neurological stimulation is going really well.  This is definitely Orcrist's most relaxed puppies.  They are very calm and accept handling as normal.  I will put my face to theirs and they will lick at me.  They rarely squirm or react in a startled manner (actually, I don't think they ever have startled). They have started crawling very quickly so I am glad that I only have 3 more rounds of stimulation--it gets hard to keep those done and those yet to done apart when they move so quickly.

1 Week 2 Days

Orcrist's puppies are happy and content.  They are very relaxed and sleep a lot because they are full. Mamma is already taking excursions outside for 10-15 minutes because she knows everyone is well.  I think she treats me like I am grandpa babysitting her puppies--she expects that I will get her if anything is amiss (which it isn't).  It is so nice to see the difference between the litters. These are normal sized puppies but they look tiny compared to Tizona's.  They are adorable and are a very relaxed and cuddly group.

First Week

Day 5

We had one runt--who doubled in size while the rest quadrupled who passed away this afternoon (Tuesday).  He had been eating but obviously had some other issues and was not able to make it (I have heard that small puppies can have a variety of internal problems that normally show within a week) .  It is very sad.  All the rest of the puppies are fairly evenly sized and are growing well. Sadly, this is the first "runt" puppy that I have lost.

Day 4

The puppies are all doing well.  They are very active and love to eat.  Orcrist still lines them up and nurses them all at once.  They will continue to get neurological stimulation today and also get their dew claws removed.  That is always tough on me but I know it is helpful.

Day 1

Orcrist surprised me by a day.  She has 10 puppies and all are eating well and look really good. As always, Orcrist is supermom and has them all lined up when it is eating time.  She is happy and doing really well. My first check (which should be accurate) is 4 boys and 6 girls. When I begin neurological stimulation (tomorrow), I will recheck and verify that I did not look at the same puppy twice. The puppies have their cute pink skin which will last from 3-7 days and then begin to change to black. They are very active and will move to their mother (a little ways) after she gets up to either change position or to eat.
