Kira's Blog

7 Weeks and 4 Days​

This is the last posting for the puppies. Normally, my last post is at the start of the 7th week, but my wife was away and it was not going to be possible to get videos on my own. I have spent a lot of time this week teaching the puppies to follow (except Kumquat and Cherry--who would rather explore). They have done fantastic at it and will be very easy to put on a leash because they are already accustomed to staying right at my heals. This is an exciting week as families will be picking up their puppies for the first time. This group is so incredibly loving, it is going to be hard to say goodbye to them.

Apricot

Apricot continues to be very balanced. She follows very well, will explore, is loving and is easy to train.

Cherry

6 Weeks and 4 Days​

My helpers are gone today so I will not be able to post individual videos of each of the puppies. At this age, unless they are completely worn out, they charge at me when I put them down so I can't get videos without a helper. I have included a video of all of the puppies playing with me this morning. Here is an update on how and what they are doing and their new weights. As a group, they have gotten to go outside for some extended periods and they are loving it! They are finished with their 6 week shots, gotten their de-wormer, and have been micro-chipped. I should have begun their crate training last night, but I went to bed too early to put them in crates since I need to start them out at 5 hours so they succeed. I will begin them on that tonight. This has been a really big week for them!  Here are their weights.
Apricot:8 lb 15 oz.
Cherry: 8 lb 7 oz.
Clementine: 8 lb 6 oz.
Peaches: 7 lb 4 oz.
Plum: 9 lb 5 oz.
Strawberry: 8 lb 14 oz.
Huckleberry: 7 lb 8 oz.
Kumquat: 10 lb 8 oz.

I have added a video of the entire group and their happy interaction with me. Most of you have been out and seen that they love coming to me--this is part of why. I will come, sit down and they will play with me. This video is from the morning, so there was dew on the grass and the puppies have already gotten quite covered. All eight puppies are mounding on me, so I can't tell you which puppy is which, but wanted you to see the joyful puppies and their loving natures. They truly are some of the sweetest puppies that I have had.

Strawberry has a beautiful personality that is very balanced. She is very sweet and loving but also likes exploring. She is intelligent and trainable.

Apricot

Apricot is our most balanced puppy. She likes to be held, will play with her siblings, likes to explore and seems very intelligent.
Weight: 8 lbs 14 oz.

Cherry

Cherry is our vocal puppy. She is the only one that will bark regularly. She is sweet, relaxed, and happy.
Weight: 8 lbs 7 oz.

Clementine

Clementine is a little more active than all but Plum. She likes to explore and play. At the same time, she likes being held and petted.

Peaches

Peaches is a sweetheart that enjoys being with us. She is very relaxed and trainable.

Plum

Plum is our most active puppy. She loves life and almost any activity. She loves her bath time, playing with all of her siblings, exploring, and will even sit for petting for a short while.

Huckleberry

Huckleberry is our most relaxed puppy. He loves to be held and loved on. He is super sweet and friendly.

Kumquat

Kumquat is very laid back and relaxed. He loves his bath time. He likes to play with Cherry.

5 Weeks and 5 Days​

I conducted the personality tests Thursday. The puppies are just a bit young to completely show their personalities so keep in mind that these results will change. Also, pinching between their toes is part of my conditioning so most puppies had no response and those that did were limited.

5 Weeks and 3 Days

The puppies continue to be incredibly social. They love being with us. They have also started to explore more and we definitely need to keep our eyes out for them.  Kira continues to be a fantastic mother. She still wants to nurse so I will start the weaning process and slowly get her separated from them. They are also eating machines! This our first round of videos. It is important to understand that getting videos of these puppies is really important to us but can be incredibly difficult to portray their true nature. Often, we have a super video and then the puppy will run out of the screen. Our friendliest puppies always charge right at us, so we can take a dozen videos to get one where you can actually see them--and then they may look tired. That said, they are still so cute that we love being able to post these.

Apricot

Apricot was really wanting to explore today while I was videoing.  I finally just decided to follow her rather than make her stay in the sun room for video.  Here she is checking out some new peek-a-boo places!
Weight: 7 lbs 11 oz.

Cherry

Cherry was very playful and frisky during video time today!  She kept running behind the furniture so I didn't get a long video of her, but you get the idea here.  
Weight: 6 lbs 15 oz.

Clementine

Clementine really wanted to keep playing with her litter mates when I brought her to the sun room for a video, so she spent most of her time looking for them.  It was really sweet!  She is very social and loves people as well!

Peaches

Peaches is very cute and she likes to play with toys. She also loves to be with us so her it is really hard to get a video of her because she wants so much to be held and cuddled.

Plum

Plum is active and playful. She is our most active puppy at this point and is very excited to be with us. She is a very happy puppy!

Strawberry is relaxed and well balanced. She likes to explore and also loves being with us.

4 Weeks 7 Days

The puppies are active, sweet, and beautiful. They have continued to grow into their personalities. All of them are very compliant and responsive to us. They are very sweet and love to be held and petted. Their conditioning is fantastic and they have no issues with any of the activities that we put them through (see 2 Weeks 6 Days comment for details). Their personalities are, for the most part, very similar and they seem to have taken after their mother in being very sweet and gentle. The most active puppies in this group (Clementine and Plum) would be relaxed in most other groups that I have had. I will post pictures later this afternoon.

Apricot

Apricot is well balanced--she loves to be held and can be very relaxed and will also explore and learn her environment. She is intelligent and adaptive.

Cherry is very relaxed and really loves being held and petted. She will explore and play fight with her siblings.

Clementine is active and likes to explore. She is also sweet and enjoys being with us.

Peaches is our little sweetheart. She is cute and cuddly--she loves to be with us. She has a relaxed personality with us but loves to play fight with her siblings.

Plum is one of our two active puppies. She likes to explore, play and is also loving. She has a very balanced personality that demonstrates intelligence.

Strawberry is very relaxed and loves to sit by my side. She is very affectionate and at this point does not explore much. She is content to stay with us and love us.

Huckleberry is super relaxed and very loving. He is very sweet and seems to have his mother's beautiful personality.

Kumquat

Kumquat is also very relaxed and loving. His personality is very similar to Huckleberry's and his mother's. He is our largest puppy at this point.

4 Weeks 4 Days

The puppies are changing so much. They are active and have distinct personalities now. I know that some of them will continue to change in the upcoming weeks, but they are getting clear preferences. Most of these puppies are relaxed and all of them are incredibly human centered. They love to be held, petted and loved. They love their conditioning, which is always so remarkable, since the purpose is to expose them to things which could be difficult later on. But when I pair that with sour cream--sour cream wins which means I win and they love me. You will see that there are some distinct looks in the puppies but they are all very beautiful. 

Girl Puppies

Apricot

Apricot loves being held and is also playful. She like to explore. She is very responsive to us.
Weight: 6 lbs 2 oz.

Cherry

Cherry loves being held and is very affectionate. She loves me back by gentle licks. She is fairly relaxed but will explore a little bit (so far) and is playful.
Weight: 5 lbs 14 oz.

Clementine

Clementine is fairly relaxed and also likes to explore. She is very loving. She will sit in our arms anytime.
Weight: 5 lbs 3 oz.

Peaches

Peaches is very relaxed and friendly. She has very delicate features. She loves being with us.
Weight: 4 lbs 8 oz.

Plum

Plum loves to cuddle and is very friendly. She also likes to explore and is one of the more active puppies from this group.

Strawberry

Strawberry is relaxed and very friendly. She will explore a bit, but still likes to stay with us most of the time.She is very cute

3 Weeks 7 Days

The puppies are named after fruits this time and have their individual pictures up. They are really cute already and are becoming very mobile. They are eating solid food and drinking water to supplement their milk now. I am starting to see a little bit of their personalities--not enough for individual comments yet but I can see some differences. Most are still very calm, relaxed, and love to be held but their are some explorers too. Enjoy the first round of pictures!

3 Weeks 3 Days

The puppies are now toddling around short distances and interacting more with each other.  They haven't learned to coordinate all of their legs yet, so they mostly tumble over each other- which leads to a lot of playing!  They still sleep a lot, but that will begin to change soon.  

2 Weeks 6 Days

The puppies are doing wonderfully well. They are all growing well and their eyes are open. They crawl well, though their heads are still too heavy to walk normally. They will begin eating solid food this week--they have just been introduced to it. As you will see in the pictures, they are very cute already! I have 3 pictures of the boys and 6 of the girls this round. They will be getting their names this week and then I will post individual pictures. Their neurological stimulation is done and I will begin doing my conditioning training Monday. For conditioning I do 6 activities, each followed by a treat of sour cream: 1) I pull their tail 2) I ruffle their fur 3) I pinch between their toes 4) I pull their ears 5) I rub their teeth 6) I hold their muzzle. Obviously, I begin very gently, but my goal is to get them to the point where they will not be startled if this were to happen at their new home. I use the positive reinforcement so they will not only put up with these activities, but look forward to them, because they are associated with special attention and treats!

2 Weeks 3  Days

Kira's puppies continue to grow and are chubby and content.  Their eyes are opening, but they still sleep most of the time. We have started giving them baths and they all love to get in the water just like their mommy!  They are always calm and still love to snuggle with each other or mommy.

1 Week 5  Days

The puppies are continuing to grow well and are passing some big milestones. They crawl now, though still just short distances, but I will find them in various clusters in their room now, spread apart by several feet. Kira is really good at making sure that everyone is satisfied and I have never seen them ask for milk.  They have made the switch from pink skin to mostly black on their paws and face.  Their eyes are also just starting to open, which you will see in the pictures. The group continues to be a very calm one when I do the neurological stimulation, which is what I expected with Kira as a mother.

1 Week 2 Days

This week the puppies are more wiggly and the boys gave me a run for my money while trying to get their picture!  They are all so sweet and they still try to nuzzle into your arm while holding them.  Here are the two wiggly males:

Kira's girls were sleepy and easier to get a group photo.  They still love to mound for warmth, so there aren't a lot of individual face photos.  They are all so sweet!

0 Weeks 1 Day

Kira continues to be a spectacular mother. Her puppies are all growing well. They have had their first round of neurological stimulation. They were fairly calm, as a group, which would make them very much like their mother. I will keep you posted on how they respond in the upcoming days. One of the female puppies is growing more slowly than the rest, at this point, so I have one puppy that is a little smaller--though she is still good sized. We are removing the dew claws later today, so it will have been a very busy day for the little ones.

0 Weeks 1 Day

The puppies are all nursing well and are content. They are often sleeping, which is a sign that their bellies are full and they are happy. It looks like Kira's milk is starting to come in. She continues to be a great mother. She knows what her puppies need and she loves being a mother.

Day 1-July 22

Kira delivered 8 puppies today. She has 6 girls and 2 boys. They are all really good sized and look to be very healthy and even (same sized). They are nursing well. Kira is a pro at this now and has already made life easy for me-she has her puppies nicely lined up and puts them under the heat lamp or her front leg when they need warming. It is amazing how smart she is. The puppies were born while I was at my work and I forgot to ask my wife to put the heat lamp on. All day she warmed them herself but once the lamp was on, she had them warming there instead! I have pictures and will post them as quickly as I can.

Pictures are taken under a red heat lamp--I will get some away from the lamp tomorrow.
