4 Weeks 5 Days
We have named Anelace’s puppies after a circus theme. Here are their first round of individual pictures. The coloration is not great, but it was as close as I could get to match what they really look like. They are a little whiter than what is showing.
We should be able to start getting individual personalities now that they have their name tags. They are generally active and playful in the early morning and fairly relaxed from noon on.

4 Weeks 1 Day
Anelace’s puppies are getting sweeter and sweeter every day. Here are a couple pictures. Our comments are still about the group since they don’t have their individual nametags yet. They are very calm, sweet and cuddly. They love their bathtime and will take a good nap afterwards which is why the pictures always look like they’re sleeping. That said, they do sleep a lot, because their bellies are full and they’re content.
3 Weeks 4 Days
I tried to make this post yesterday, but I had a website issue. Anelace’s puppies are doing great. They are active and are beginning to look beautiful. However, the pictures all came after they had their bath and they were completely knocked out.🙂 it was so cute to see the two girls watching the puppies so closely.
2 Weeks 5 Days
My posts have been quite limited because now that they’re past the first two weeks my daughter-in-law and son are looking after the puppies so that I finally get to sleep. They give me regular updates but so far, it’s a little bit limited on the pictures. The puppies are doing great. They are all growing and are super content. Anelace has settled into being a mother. She seems to have down how to nurse two different groups. When I took pictures tonight, they were super roly poly!
2 Weeks 1 Day
July 4th was Independence Day for me. My daughter-in-law took over watching the puppies at that point, so I haven’t posted in a couple days. I’m back now and the puppies are doing fantastic. Anelace is getting better at this mothering job. She definitely loves being a mother. She just hasn’t understood all of the nuances to it yet. I will try to get pictures later today.
1 Week 3 Days
We are still working hard to keep as many puppies alive as we can. This has been one of the most difficult litters. Anelace likes being a mother at times but from our research, this litter was too big for her. New mothers struggle to keep up with bigger litters and that’s what we’ve experienced. Hopefully, we’ve turned a corner. The puppies are getting bigger so in the next week or so they should be able to start on solid food, and that will ease everything up.
1 Week 2 Days
I would think that after 10+ years of doing this, that I would’ve learned all of the dog’s tricks but I have been taught a new one. Several years ago, Orcrist had a puppy that had back feet that didn’t function properly. Every time she would nurse I would put it on her and within five minutes, she would back up by a foot and have all the puppies crawl to her. This puppy was unable to crawl so she was effectively eliminating it.
This time, Anelace stopped licking five of her puppies because she didn’t have enough milk for 11. So, despite my efforts to make sure that the weaker puppies were getting primary spots, she was identifying who was, and who wasn’t going to get to live. We lost that first puppy and I assumed it was because it was a weaker puppy but it confused me because it had a full belly. We have now lost a second puppy that also had a full belly. It was then that I saw that some of the puppies were not as clean as they should be. I have gotten her to lick the remaining three puppies and I’ve added extra vitamins and super rich food to help boost her milk production, so I think we are good now. (Update from later in the day: I am struggling to get her to lick them again, so I’m not out of the woods. So I realize now that I am fighting against her instincts. Now we get to find out if I can overcome them. I got her to lick them again by using a washcloth and warm water to simulate the licking).

Day 7
We had a really long day yesterday. We could tell that one of the puppies was becoming lethargic so we started working a lot with her. Unfortunately, she was not able to make it and we lost her at 2 AM last night. This was one of the three smaller puppies. It was actually the one that had grown to the size of the others so I thought that it was doing well, even though it never ate well. Amazingly, the smallest puppy is one of the best eaters so that gives me hope that he will still do well.
Day 5
The puppies are nursing and growing well. Rhiannon is a happy mother. All 11 have started neurological stimulation. It’s so interesting to watch how they respond the first time compared to the later times. Amazingly, I have a picture that you can count all 11 puppies in.
Day 3
Update: all the puppies are still doing well. There are now 2 puppies that are smaller-one has completely caught up and another is getting hard to find, so my nursing plan is working well. It is amazing to watch a new mother do everything she is supposed to. The puppies are often completely wet because Anelace is licking them. When I first began breeding I thought that it was neat that they liked their puppies so clean only to learn that puppies are unable to eliminate waste without this stimulation.
Day 2
Update: so far all of the puppies are doing well. They’re all eating and growing. However, there are three puppies that are a bit smaller than the others, which is going to make it difficult for them to compete as they get bigger. I’m doing my best to help them but these are the ones that are the hardest to keep alive in bigger liters. Hopefully they will catch up quickly. I am making sure that they get to nurse in the best spots every time.
Day 1
Anelace shocked us with 11 puppies out of nine possible (ultrasound). They are small but fully mature and healthy looking so it’s going to be work to keep them alive but so far, so good. I have begun making sure that they are all nursing. Now that she’s had her last puppy she settled in is doing what she supposed to do – nurse and love her puppies.
